Training - Advanced Archaeological Crime Investigation Class

Class Description

Archaeological Resource Investigations Inc., in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Training Center (NTC), introduces a five-day class that provides next level training in advanced ARPA Investigations. The ARI instructors for this course are the best Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) instructors available. All of the instructors teaching this course played key roles in developing the investigative techniques and legal strategies and in establishing case setting precedents in some of the most significant archaeological investigations and undercover operations since ARPA was enacted. These cases and operations include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Bow Cave Case
  • Kinnikinik Case
  • Polar Mesa Cave Case
  • Palluche Canyon Case
  • La Manga Canyon Rock Shelter Case
  • Operation Export
  • Operation Heritage
  • Operation Silent Witness

Each class participant will emerge from this intense advanced course with new material for their investigative “tool kits” and a better understanding of the tactics, strategies and legal issues that will enable them to investigate or prosecute a wide range of complex ARPA and other land management or natural resource related investigations. This advanced course will include extensive case studies presented by the experts who were directly involved with these cases and will illustrate how the topics listed below were utilized in actual investigations.

Topics covered in this class are:

  • Archaeology and Law Enforcement
  • Archaeologist’s Perspective and Responsibilities
  • ARPA and Related Laws
  • ARPA Search Warrants
  • ARPA Search Warrants and Archaeologists

  • Technical Investigative Equipment
  • Officer Safety and Survival
  • ARPA and the Internet
  • Interagency Cooperation

A practical exercise in ARPA Search Warrant and Operational Plan Development is included in this course. Some evening course work will be required as a team member in order to prepare the search warrant affidavits and operations plan that will be part of the practical exercises. These practical exercises will enable the staff of instructors to evaluate and test each participants understanding of the material presented during the class. In addition, these exercises will give each student the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the material presented during this course by applying these concepts in a real world simulation. It is recommended that class participants bring lap top computers to facilitate the practical exercise coursework.

Participant eligibility for this class is restricted to commissioned l aw enforcement officers, active duty military personnel or prosecuting attorney’s from local, state, tribal, military or federal agencies due to the law enforcement sensitive material that is presented during this course. It is recommended that all participants successfully complete the ARI three-day Archaeological Law Enforcement Class as a prerequisite for this course.
